ProfilePicWelcome to my blog, I’m Wouter De Coster and I’m a PhD student at the University of Antwerp (VIB Center for Molecular Neurology) with a Master in Biochemistry & Biotechnology.

My research project focusses on elucidating the genetics of Neurodegenerative Diseases in general and in particular Frontotemporal Dementia. I mainly work on data generated by whole genome sequencing, whole exome sequencing, targeted resequencing, RNA-seq and Nanopore Sequencing using MinION. As such, I’m investigating the contribution of both small variants (SNPs), both coding and regulatory, together with larger structural variants which are more difficult to discover and characterise using short read technologies.

My main interest is in testing new technologies, developing challenging assays and bioinformatic analysis. I taught myself Python programming and I’m also reasonably proficient in using R. I volunteer and moderate on Biostars.

In my free time, I like to play a game of chess on chess.com, feel free to challenge me to a game. I’m a fan of martial arts, currently doing Karate but earlier I also practised Jiu-Jitsu and Taekwondo.

I aim to regularly add a post here concerning an aspect of my work, concerning scripting, data analysis, data visualisation, testing tools and technology.
